Improving your Juliet balcony with sliding doors

What is a Juliet balcony?

Commonplace in the Mediterranean, Juliet balconies got their name from the famous scene in Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet.

Sometimes referred to as a balconette, it’s an architectural term to describe a ‘false’ balcony or railing at the outer pane of a window-opening reaching to the floor, which has the appearance of a balcony when the window is open.

Glass Juliet balconies are an emerging trend

An increasing number of luxury flats and apartments in the UK are being built with Juliet balconies looking out from living spaces or bedrooms.

If you are fortunate enough to have a balconette which overlooks some stunning scenery or landmarks, a great way of maximising that view is to consider installing a sliding door system that not only has the versatility tilt inwards for secure ventilation, it can slide open sideways to provide unrestricted views, adding tremendous value to the property as a whole.

Sliding doors

Contemporary glass Juliet balconies offer a significant advantage over the traditional wrought iron or steel grill type. Choose a sliding door for unobtrusive views and secure ventilation. A fitted sliding door would never obscure your view from the inside, but it would greatly enhance the look of the property from the outside.

It would appear the market is certainly heading towards lower maintenance, eco-friendly glass Juliet balconies.

At Urban & Grey we can provide the Supertherm80 PST as a highly effective accompaniment to any Juliet balcony. Its main features are:

  • The Supertherm80 parallel-slide-and-tilt (PST) is a sliding door system which not only closes flush but can also tilt inwards for secure ventilation in living areas.
  • Available in two, three or four-panel configurations, our Supertherm80 PST is capable of sliding in both directions
  • Features a weathered step threshold (approx. 80mm) as standard

Bringing the outdoors in…

Some people might say that Juliet balconies are pointless and unnecessary, but there’s something genuinely charming about them from inside and out.

While you’re never going to be able to get a group of you outside on it with a table and chairs to soak up the sun, with your sliding doors open you can take a step back and you’ll soon notice th narrow balcony itself can act as a rail for the rest of the living space, creating one big balcony.
